Is Ghost Investigation Dangerous? – One man’s story

The following account is not secondhand or in any way fictionalized. This is a personal account of my own experiences.

A group of people enters a old building, armed with all sorts of electronic equipment and digital cameras. They come from all walks of life, a college student, a grandmother, an engineer, but they all share in common one purpose: to discover evidence of ghosts and therefore a paranormal world. This activity takes them out of the mundane, depressing ordinary world of the physical existence.

This scene is played out hundreds of times each night across the western world with the newfound “hobby” of ghost hunting or paranormal research. The popularity of this activity has been heightened by such radio programs as Coast to Coast AM and television programs as “The Ghost Hunters.”

This pursuit used to be one I participated in with great zeal. Armed with the latest digital video camera and audio recorder, I would cruise locations ranging from historical graveyards to modern-day office buildings in search of evidence of a life beyond our physical existence. I most certainly did come away with evidence.

The interesting thing was the more I searched the more I found. At first this phenomena would only occur at the locations I was visiting. However, the phenomena began to follow me home. At first, there were strange movements I would see the corner of my eye. The phenomena began to elevate and until not only I was experiencing these things, but other people were experiencing them as well.

The problem was these experiences were no longer fun. Shadow people, semitransparent dark blurry forms of human like shapes, would be seen regularly running down my hallway towards my bedroom. Family members began to have bizarre dreams and incredibly vivid nightmares. If these manifestations were only happening to me, I could’ve passed it off as vivid imagination. When precious family members began to be negatively affected I realized the seriousness of the situation.

The height of this activity reached the pinnacle shortly after there was an unusual murder in our neighborhood, which is a quiet suburban neighborhood in the third most safe city in America according to the FBI. We also began to have UFO sightings, and incredibly bizarre buzzing or whirring sounds flying over our neighborhood. My son while walking on a trail near our house, saw an upright red-cloaked creature with animal-like legs as clear as day.

Several teenagers in our neighborhood had been experimenting with occultic conjuring on a hill above our neighborhood. Occultic symbols that I was familiar with due to my research, began to be painted like graffiti on one of the high-voltage transmission line towers. A feeling of dread enveloped the area.

The only thing I did know was that I and my family were oppressed by some very dark forces. The spiritual world was very real to me. All of the “happy thoughts” and New Age appeals to the “protecting light” had no effect on this activity. I cannot tell you how terrible and dreadful some of these experiences were.

In desperation, I appealed to the son of God, Yeshua, known in the Western world as Jesus. After I gave my life to Jesus, the oppressive activity stopped. Activity continued, and to some degree continues today, for the others in the neighborhood. However, for me and my family, we are at peace. While it may sound corny or hokey to you, I know for certain that when I pled the blood of Jesus and asked for the forgiveness of my sins, this unleashed a far greater restraining power over these dimensional experiences.

I can’t say for certain that all the activity we experienced was caused by my paranormal research. Clearly there are those in the neighborhood who were practicing Occultic worship and perhaps even overt Satanism. However, I do know one thing for certain. If you seek communication with the spirit world you can very well open the door to negative entities that masquerade as dead humans. Ghost research is very much like a Ouija board; it is a vehicle of communication.

Some ghost researchers see the danger in séances and Ouija boards. However, the very act of this hobby-research is reaching out in hopes of communication with this spirit world. When you run a digital recorder in hopes of Electronic Voice Phenomena, you are inviting an entity to talk to you. In my opinion, opening up yourself to the spirit world in this manner is akin to putting a fresh steak in the middle of the jungle full of hungry, cunning and deceptive tigers.

Lots of ghost research websites promise protection via happy thoughts and mysticism.

In my experience, “visualizing” yourself being surrounded by imaginary light is not going to cut it in protection. Despite what you may hear, human beings cannot use mental power against multidimensional entities of incredible potency and cunning, anymore than you can use mental, positive thoughts against an oncoming locomotive. The spiritual world is very real and can manipulate our physical world.

Ghost research for the sake of science is one thing, but most people are not doing it for science; they are hoping for experience. So if you’re so inclined to want to experience the spiritual world, I would invite you to seek God through Yeshua. I know that He makes the spiritual world for me very real now in a very positive way. I don’t need to creep into darkened buildings to know that there is a world beyond my physical reality. Now instead of dark oppression, I have daily amazing things happen to me that could not be coincidence, and are very positive.  God continues to open His word to me more and more.  I still maintain a research into this world that most people don’t believe in. However, now I am not on my own, but relying on God in his infinite word for guidance. For me, all is supernatural now

Hi Drywind, thank you for this relevant post! My question about this, is do you believe that even WATCHING these programs can affect us?

I had a very interesting experience on this subject not too long ago. My kids and spouse were out watching “Ghosthunters”, and I was in the back area of the house, when suddenly my husband called out to me anxiously. He asked if I had come into the room, I answered no, I had been in the back. He repeatedly asked, was I sure? Because while watching the show, suddenly from directly behind them, allegedly came MY voice in a disappoving tone, admonishing them, “THAT does not look very interesting.” Considering the tone, the message, and the fact that this fell on the late eve of the Feast of the Guardian Angels (Oct.2nd), it is my opinion that God gave permission to my Guardian Angel to admonish my family.

I had always felt queasy about ghost shows, since I take a Christian viewpoint in regards to these kind of phenomena, and that admonishment gave me the impetus to put down my foot and banish the show.

Do you believe just watching it can affect us? Are the actors of that show in danger?

    Dear Drywind:
I would caution anybody who dabbles in ghost hunting to beware. These are not friendly beings looking out for your good. There is a reason GOD said not to go after spirits in any form what so ever. Are people that ignorant of the bible that they believe this is a good thing? Every time I see this on tv I turn to my wife and say “how can people be so ignorant not to realize these are demons posing as ghosts”. PEOPLE READ YOUR BIBLE it’s in there in black and white you don’t fool around with this stuff. And I believe unless you are covered by the blood of Jesus by watching it you can open a door way to let these beings in. I would repent and ask Jesus to forgive me and cleanse me with HIS blood according to 1John 1:9.

    Nimbus,
A child of God redeemed through the blood of Jesus cannot be harmed by these spiritual entities.
Consider the words of Paul regarding the power that lives in those who follow Jesus and have accepted his atonement::

Eph 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Eph 1:22 And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church,

This does not mean that we would never experience negative entities and their games designed to provoke fear. If this were so, we would not need Ephesians Chapter 6. I know we do not need to be fearful; we do need to rely on Him. Remember, the power of the Holy Spirit in the original Greek is “dunamis” from which we derive the word “Dynamite” .

While I do believe that God sends his help oftentimes via our guardian angels, I remember that the ultimate power is Jesus, and this power lives inside of us via the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13).

I myself did have an experience in the past, prior to being saved, when after I simply watched a very compelling video of a real ghostly entity from reputable researchers, many strange and disturbing things happened.

I can only tell you what the Lord has put on my heart in regards to this subject.
When I research these supernatural subjects I pray and ask protection via the blood of Jesus. I know His protection binds the dark forces. I myself would not watch shows involving real supernatural enities for simply entertainment value. (I refer to 2 Corinthians 10:3-5). It is my opinion when a real entity manifests via video, audio, or photos the replay of that material can provide additional footholds for the entity. Father Malachi Martin referred to this phenomena as “recognition”

Having said that, tissue paper ghosts in the Hallmark store and episodes of Scooby Doo I don’t think are an issue. :)

I do know that I need to continue to claim protection from God through Jesus, and ask Him to bind the dark forces. I know Jesus is perfectly capable of binding these things once and for all, but He wants me to continue to come to Him for help. From time to time little things occur I know are not illusions or random, but they stop once I pray and plead the blood of Christ and all heaviness is wiped away.

Nimbus: Your right on keep pleading the blood of Jesus and nothing can harm your spirit because what is the body but just a shell.

I think we can be aware of these other dimensional realities without engaging with them. I believe that a lot of the people who are ghost hunting are confusing spirituality with a need for glamour and power. Now there are ghost hunting companies going a step further by charging large fees for their efforts and this is even worse. People are trying to get rich off of this under the guise of professionalism and spirituality when they’re really opportunists.
What’s worse is that they’re inviting negative entities in to our reality which seems to make paranormal investigator’s services all the more necessary. I also want to say that I too have had experiences after watching the ghost hunting shows on t.v. that are quite blatant so negative entities are also using this as a way to get to the viewing audience. Yes, most definitely, trouble is caused by watching these shows. I no longer watch but pray and meditate to the one being that can make this right—God. This new paranormal ghost hunting business is giving more power to the dark forces and bringing deceptive entities in to our world. It’s very dangerous and needs to stop. If anyone is doing this and reads this, think of your children, your pets, babies in your families or anyone you love. I guarantee that they’ll be attacked as well and it will be on account of you. Do you really want that?

  6. Zach on Sun, 11th Sep 2011 4:03 pm

I believe that there is a confusion in facts about paranormal entities on which spirits it is that had been seen. In my Christian faith and belief I actually believe that it is extremely dangerous to communicate with the dead in any method if it involves speaking to spirits and waiting for replies from them. There are good and evil entities. I don’t really believe that there are such thing as neutral spirits. I believe that “ghosts” probably do exist… But I’m skeptical of it because there are also demonic spirits capable of deceiving the living to believe that they are benevolent and harmless. At the same time, I am not discrediting the possibility that ghosts do exist either because somewhere in the Bible that there is “one of the higher heavens.” I’m not sure of that until I do take the time to read and study the Bible and interpret the meaning of the scriptures.

I research on the paranormal mostly about hauntings and also about random encounters with spirits. I ask God for his protection and guidance as well, since there are many bad spirits out there. I have seen full-body apparitions at least several separate times in my life, but it is very rare. I am sensitive as well, I have felt energy of a spiritual presence before involuntarily. I have not done any research though for months now…because of college, errands to make, etc. I don’t watch any episodes of the show regarding to the paranormal if at any minute the show presents any indication that the spirit is indeed malevolent based on what I had studied.

I am a paranormal investigator, and I can say that investigating is very dangerous, I spend time telling people who don’t do this to not do it, its believed that once you step over the line of investigating these spirits know you and will seek you out even if you do quit. I agree with Zach, melevolent spirits or demons can and do pretend to be human spirits to gain trust of the person in question, once thats done more and more things start to happen, In some cases a person will shun his or her family, change in demenor and become more and more isolated as time goes on. the more contact the worse it becomes. So I suggest this to those who are interested in getting involved, don’t its not something thats a game or a weekend hobby per say, because you can become consumed by it and you really do not know what can follow you home after doing an ‘inoccent’ investigation.

I have a question regarding the signs of demonic oppression as it relates to “ghost hunting.” My husband got interested in ghost hunting when all the tv shows started. I am a born again christian &though there was a time my husband prayed and asked for salvation I’m not sure how sincere it was even though only God can answer that question since only he can see his heart. I became extremely ill w/severe chronic pancreatitis. I was in a fetal position 24/7/365 for almost 3 yrs until I found a surgeon who ended up removing 70% of necrotic colon, spleen & pancreas. During this time, my husband & a friend from work decided to get the gear & got permission to investigate places like Lizzie Borden’s house. My ? is since then my son, me & cat in our home see very fast moving entities, hear voices/footsteps etc. Worse is infestation by bird mites that bite only me & cat so bad that I sleep on a plastic covered chair yet pest co. say theycan’t find anything or don’t returncalls. Please help!

    Laura,
Christ alone has the power to break the power of the enemy and I would encourage you to immerse yourself in Him and the Bible. Let yourself be filled with the Spirit of the Lord and let the Love He gives you pour out over your family. The fruit of the spirit is acid in the face of the enemy and the minions. The word of God in Ephesians 6 outlines what to do and it all involves aspects of Christ – your salvation, faith, prayer, word, patience and trust in the Lord God. I can’t say for sure that all your problems are caused by a family member doing ghost investigation, but it is certainly not a good thing.

I’d also strongly encourage you to get involved in a good, balanced, loving Bible-believing fellowship. If the leadership of the Church is strong in the Lord, they can come and join you in prayer over you, your home and family. Joining with other believers in long-term prayer is a great comfort and is truly the heavy artillery . Rather than pointing to others and what they are doing in the occult, focus on the Lord changing you even as you endure hardship with Christ’s strength and grace. The Christian life involves battles, just look at the apostle Paul, who endured much. But it is this very hardship the Lord will use for His perfect plan:

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. [8] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. [9] And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. [10] Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. – 2Cr 12:7-10 KJV

Finally, let your reading and music be that which is pleasing and sacred to Christ. This is more acid for the enemy. Expect things to get worse for a awhile before they get better, as this is a counterattack strategy designed to discourage you.

In Christ’s Love, Grace and Power,

    Drywind.

I am very fond of horror movies and true ghost or paranormal stories. I also like to read about ‘most haunted locations in the world’ . May these be harmful?

  11. drywind on Tue, 14th Aug 2012 9:19 pm

    Hi Amit,
Welcome to Drywind.net. I think you are the person to answer this question. I Corinthians 10 says “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Would you be comfortable watching these movies or reading these stories with Jesus?

I think we all enjoy thrilling stories of the paranormal because they remind us that our physical existence is temporary and only a small reality. That is why when you read of the amazing supernatural things that happened after Christ resurrected, it gives me a thrill. There is so much darkness in our lives. Why not think on the supernatural spirit stories that are full of light instead of the darkness?

Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people. The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!” – Mat 27:50-54 NLT

Thankfully, my parents taught me never to get involved with paranormal /supernatural type activities. I was taught from an early age that these things can open doors to demonic activity. Also heard as a child from older people who had engaged in playing with Ouija boards, and the terrifying experiences they had. Tarot cards, horoscopes, palm reading- all of these are used by demons to misrepresent themselves to us as “harmless fun”. People need to avoid these things. Ghost shows are just another way to open yourself up to demonic oppression.

  13. Rachel on Fri, 29th Jan 2016 8:57 pm

I noticed this article is from 2010. Today, is January 29, 2016. The other day, I heard a podcast on Youtube. The show is called Real Ghost Stories Online. The episode’s name was proving spirits.
The young man being interviewed is now twenty. His first “investigation” was when he was seventeen. He and his friends trespassed an old building. He was “lucky” and an angry woman appeared to him and wanted him to leave.
He went on to talk about involving himself in a voodoo ritual in which the so called priestess, conjured up something that scared her and she apologized, told the guys they were on their own and left. They got involved in Wicca and black magic to conjure spirits. They had to go to a priest for a minor exorcism.
I got so angry and I left a phone message for Tony Brueski, the producer and interviewer. I told him he should have been more responsible and never aired this interview.
Then, I did something very out of character for me. I sent an email to Knight Time Paranormal, the group that did all these dangerous and, quite frankly, really stupid things.
The kid claims he is a Christian, but when I told him scriptures that forbid Christians from being involved in these type things. Basically, this twenty year old kid told me he is a grown up and that even though the bible forbids these activities and calls them detestable, he said he was going to keep doing it anyway.
How many bad experiences and cleansings and minor or full blown exorcisms before he gets it? You can’t tell this kids anything. They are seduced by the unknown and are mere thrill seekers. We don’t need anymore paranormal investigations to prove there is a paranormal and preterm at Ural realm. Whatever happened to obeying God?

  14. drywind on Fri, 29th Jan 2016 10:30 pm

That’s not surprising Rachel. I think we should both pray for that young man. It is Christ, not our condemnation who will bring him out of darkness.

I have been saved for many years and have become lax in my faith. I today realized that I am truly addicted to Ghost hunting shows. When alone that is all I want to do, search for any paranormal shoe. I realized tonight when the lord put a deep conviction on my heart. I came to the internet to see if addiction of this sort is common, it is. I pledge tonight to stop watching any shows such as these. I pray for the holy iris to refresh my faith, I pray for all darkness encroaching in my home and family to be banished. I am thankful for this forum for helping me admit my weakness.

  16. drywind on Sun, 10th Apr 2016 10:24 pm

    Leigh,
Thanks for sharing what the Lord is telling you. I can only encourage you that the Lord will open up a far more amazing journey with Him, with your closest Love, who is Christ the Lord, when you draw close to Him and His Word. The theater-of-the-mind that the dark side plays is nothing compared to the Lord’s power. If you’re like me, I had to have Christ fill the void that I was searching for.

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

How do you discern whethet the Lord is calling you to deliverance ministry? I have seen and known spirits that are troubling others since I was very young and I have been told that my prayers and laying on of hands have been freeing to other believers. I am a charismatic Catholic but my ultra conservative Catholic upbringing told me that these activities as for the clergy only. I have always been interested in the paranormal world but do not believe in speaking to or summoning spirits out of a sense of curiosity or thrill seeking. I believe God gave me a special gift but I dont want to be deceived or harm others. Thanks for all you do to educate others about the dangers of paranormal activities.

  18. drywind on Mon, 14th May 2018 6:04 pm

Kit – this is a very late reply. Sorry about that. Thanks for posting your comment. Remember that it is Christ who delivers. Yes we pray and He answers. When we pray against darkness, it should never be by our own authority, but by the authority of Christ. I am wary of all the pseudo-Christian hype around deliverance ministry. Sorry, I’ve experienced a great deal of deception and hocus-pocus in my youth when in the charismatic movement. In my opinion, this hype is used by the dark side. Are there legitimate Christians who formally help deliver? Yes, but the real deliverance comes by the power of Christ when a person accepts the free gift of Jesus Christ and receives the Holy Spirit, who I believe comes into a person’s life upon acceptance, not by human hands or manifestation of tongues. Deliverance without salvation is not true deliverance. (Matthew 12:45). Christian Spiritual Oppression is another subject but that is a matter of prayer and filling one’s life with Christ.
